The canopy on the walnut tree
is finally a rich shade of spring green:
it offers afternoon cover
for a red squirrel
whose busy morning
has left her sprawled
along the fence
this late afternoon.
She lays motionless
except for an occasional
twitch of an ear
as though she were
sifting the city sounds
for just the perfect
pitch of ease,
closing her eyes
like a fully content
sadhu
wanting nothing:
needing little.

If I observe with
my heart
I can feel
her tenderness
for indeed she
has the thick
sprawl of
a soon to be mama
spent
after
filling the corners
of her secluded nest
with all the nutty
delights
she hid this fall
and spring –
I’ve watched her
nibble on the fresh
shoots from this
very tree that
shades her,
and seen the delicate
delight she takes
as she tastes
one and then
another.
Often she cleans
her face in a flurry
of rapid paws
as if to twice taste
the woody snack.
I’ve seen her
run the fence
with some new morsel
to deliver
up into the highest
branches.
Busy busy –
not now:
here she lingers
in the late afternoon
light
fully
in the moment,
and I can feel
her long and slow
breath.
In an instant
we are one,
so fluid
and effortless
we float
past the city scape
into the sky
itself
till we disappear
as one long
cloud
into
the vastness
of space
into nothingness.
This fence will outlive
her
and perhaps me,
but not this moment.
