I thought this was
meant to be a poem
about death,
but I remembered
what a friend said
last night:
“be like the leaf
who wasn’t afraid
of the wind,
withered and brown
she rode it to her
final destiny
over the ocean
into the forest
to finally become
one with the earth
dust
melding
into the ethers.”

the beach
I see footprints
of the many
carrying
their
loads
of life
weighted down,
sighing
stepping
freely
into joy:
as their hearts
open
and begin
floating
like
kites
over
this often
senseless life:
sand
lovingly
accepting
their tainted gifts,
knowing
full well
tides
will clean the slate:
later
as the full moon
rises
in its harvest glory
ghost crabs
invade
the few deepIMG_0909
prints left
in the dry sand
burrowing
deeper
under the night sky:
grateful
for the heavy
weight –
what is one’s pain
is another’s gift.

The air is
scented
with too many memories
this morning:
jasmine
fir
desert rain
mountain light
trains
fading
into the dark….
They surround me
like
a painful mala.
But,
with each step
beads
unstring
into
a melody
I know
all too well:

“If you can’t be
with the one
you love,
love the one you’re with.”

When all is said
and done,
there is wisdom
to that ditty.
